UNH Cooperative Extension seeks student writers

The UNH Cooperative Extension is seeking student writers. Students may be able to get credit for English 620 Applied Experience. Students would be asked to do the following:
Write stories about UNH Cooperative Extension’s impact with its clients, “success” stories showing how Extension worked with the client, and the end result or value of working with Extension
Write stories focused on the philanthropic needs of UNH Cooperative Extension – the Extension is embarking on fundraising, in coordination with the UNH Foundation, and the Extension specialists tasked with this effort need one-page “fact” sheets that relate to how Extension would use private donations.
Interview clients throughout the state, attending twilight and other meetings that show how Extension’s field specialists work with their clients.
Any “breaking” news such as how the Extension can provide information on the West Nile Virus, ticks, food safety, etc., that would be sent to statewide media.
UNH Cooperative Extension would provide transportation costs, and/or the possibility of using the ZIP cars for transportation.
Hours: Whatever works into the schedule of these students. Students would have to work at least four hours a week for the whole semester to earn one credit for English 620.
Anyone interested should contact Prof. Lisa Miller, lc.miller@unh.edu.

UNH journalism students create news website: "Sustainable Stories"

An advanced newswriting class at UNH went digital this semester, as students published final stories at sustainu.org, an original news publication that covers stories of sustainability. This excerpt of a note I posted on the website covers the basics:

"The work you find here took root in February, when I invited Sara Cleaves, of UNH's Sustainability Academy, to visit English 622: Advanced Newswriting, a core course in the UNH Journalism Program. I wanted students to think critically about how they consider stories, and I chose the topic of sustainability - broad enough to offer students plenty of reporting range, yet focused enough to give shape to this one-time news publication."

Students responded with an impressive breadth and depth of original reporting; story subjects included the recertification of a New Hampshire nuclear power plant, the hard realities for combat veterans returning to campus, the future of concussions, and a profile of a Maine farmer fighting for organic crops and the family farm.

So stop by sustainu.org and join the conversation in the comments section. And stay tuned for more such projects from UNH journalism students in the months ahead. After all, there is a presidential campaign ramping up in New Hampshire.

Andy Carvin via Twitter

In editing the other day, we talked about Andy Carvin, social media strategist and Twitter news pioneer for NPR.
Today Carvin spoke to a journalism class at American University, and Sarah Parnass live-tweeted his talk in a very thorough way.
I put Sarah's tweets into a #Storify: a cumulative 140-character narrative of what Carvin had to say about getting started on Twitter, the Arab Spring, and issues facing journalists in the digital world.
Students should read it here.

Friends, Followers and Retweets: Meg Heckman, #UNH journalism alum, on journalists and social media

Meg Heckman, web editor for the Concord Monitor and #UNH class of 2001, has a great essay posted today @digethics that explores the role of journalists, social media and neutrality. You can check it out here.

Volunteers needed for NPR at UNH

Journalism majors and other interested students: Get an up-close look at a live-audience production of NPR's Science Friday, an interview/issues show that will be broadcasting from the UNH campus on May 1. New Hampshire Public Radio host Brady Carlson will join Science Friday host Ira Flatow for the segment. NHPR is looking for four or five volunteers to serve as ushers, handing out programs and helping to seat people.

But come early and you could also get a behind-the-scenes look at sound check, set-up and more - and perhaps a chance to meet producers and others from NHPR: A window into top-level national radio journalism.

Volunteers are needed from 5pm to 6pm May 1 in the MUB. You are welcome to stay for the show, too.
Interested in volunteering, contact Tom Haines at tom.haines@unh.edu or @twhaines.

A digital journalism master class at Ham Smith this week

Thanks, Twitter. That's the name of a segment I sometimes use in reporting and editing classes - a way to bring in some cool case study or interesting journalistic oddity that comes across Twitter in the hours before class.
Henry Lopez talked Tuesday with students in English 622.

This week that took a real-life twist, as Henry Lopez, a digital media consultant and former web editor and reporter for The Santa Fe New Mexican burst from the Twitterverse to stand before 19 #UNH journalism students in English 622/Advanced Newswriting.
Read how this came to be, and what Lopez had to say about reporting, digital tools, online advertising, and more, at a post on my tumblr: journalism21.tumblr.com.
Thanks, Twitter. And Henry!
