UNH journalism students create news website: "Sustainable Stories"

An advanced newswriting class at UNH went digital this semester, as students published final stories at sustainu.org, an original news publication that covers stories of sustainability. This excerpt of a note I posted on the website covers the basics:

"The work you find here took root in February, when I invited Sara Cleaves, of UNH's Sustainability Academy, to visit English 622: Advanced Newswriting, a core course in the UNH Journalism Program. I wanted students to think critically about how they consider stories, and I chose the topic of sustainability - broad enough to offer students plenty of reporting range, yet focused enough to give shape to this one-time news publication."

Students responded with an impressive breadth and depth of original reporting; story subjects included the recertification of a New Hampshire nuclear power plant, the hard realities for combat veterans returning to campus, the future of concussions, and a profile of a Maine farmer fighting for organic crops and the family farm.

So stop by sustainu.org and join the conversation in the comments section. And stay tuned for more such projects from UNH journalism students in the months ahead. After all, there is a presidential campaign ramping up in New Hampshire.
