Eat cake and celebrate journalism students' accomplishments

Come honor graduating seniors with cake and conversation on Wednesday, April 25 at 5:30 p.m. in Hamilton Smith 42.

A panel of graduating seniors will talk about where they're headed - from newsrooms to social media marketing jobs - and share lessons learned through the internship and job-hunting process. Undergraduate majors, this is a great chance to get tips, advice and information on the road ahead.

In editing the other day, we talked about Andy Carvin, social media strategist and Twitter news pioneer for NPR. 

Today Carvin spoke to a journalism class at American University, and Sarah Parnass live-tweeted his talk in a very thorough way.

I put Sarah's tweets into a #Storify: a cumulative 140-character narrative of what Carvin had to say about getting started on Twitter, the Arab Spring, and issues facing journalists in the digital world.

Volunteers needed for NPR at UNH

Journalism majors and other interested students: Get an up-close look at a live-audience production of NPR's Science Friday, an interview/issues show that will be broadcasting from the UNH campus on May 1. New Hampshire Public Radio host Brady Carlson will join Science Friday host Ira Flatow for the segment. NHPR is looking for four or five volunteers to serve as ushers, handing out programs and helping to seat people.

But come early and you could also get a behind-the-scenes look at sound check, set-up and more - and perhaps a chance to meet producers and others from NHPR: A window into top-level national radio journalism.

Volunteers are needed from 5pm to 6pm May 1 in the MUB. You are welcome to stay for the show, too.

A digital journalism master class at Ham Smith this week

Thanks, Twitter. That's the name of a segment I sometimes use in reporting and editing classes - a way to bring in some cool case study or interesting journalistic oddity that comes across Twitter in the hours before class.

Henry Lopez talked Tuesday with students in English 622.

This week that took a real-life twist, as Henry Lopez, a digital media consultant and former web editor and reporter for The Santa Fe New Mexican burst from the Twitterverse to stand before 19 #UNH journalism students in English 622/Advanced Newswriting.

Journalist Chelsea Conaboy, '04, to discuss '10 years in a newsroom: The things I've found worth fighting for'

Boston Globe and Boston.com health reporter Chelsea Conaboy, UNH Class of 2004, will give a talk on “10 years in a newsroom: The things I've found worth fighting for” on Wednesday, April 11 at 5 p.m. in MUB Theatre I. The talk is free and open to the public. Please join us.

As the Donald Murray Visiting Journalist for 2012, Conaboy will also visit UNH journalism classes April 9-12.

Conaboy writes about Boston's medical industry, state and national health care policy, and advancements in medical research for the White Coat Notes blog on Boston.com and the Boston Globe. Previously a business and health reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer, she started her career at the Concord Monitor. She graduated in 2004 from the University of New Hampshire with a triple major in Spanish, international affairs, and journalism, and she spent the following summer as a writing and reporting fellow at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. Conaboy was recognized by state and regional press associations in eight consecutive years, most recently by the New Jersey Press Association for a story about the mortgage crisis in that state. She received multiple awards for her work on a five-part series about a Concord woman dying of a rare cancer and her family's struggle to redefine itself after her death.

UNH alum wins top honors

Dustin Luca, UNH Class of 2010, won top honors in the Best of Community Newspaper Holdings Inc.’s journalism competition for 2011.

Luca, a staff writer for the Andover ( Mass.) Townsman, was named reporter of the year for non-daily papers.

The Townsman was named “Newspaper of the Year” among non-dailies. Judges cited its strong local reporting and conversational writing, topical coverage, reader engagement and community-minded opinion pages.

The Best of CNHI recognizes the work of the journalists who produce 80 daily newspapers, 40 non-dailies, 120 websites and 144 community magazines in 22 states.

Newspaper seeks multimedia newshound/assistant editor

The Monadnock Ledger-Transcript has a unique opportunity for a self-starter. The paper needs a news hound, editor and social media buff to lead online news efforts.

Position includes breaking hard news, pursuing enterprise reporting projects, gathering and editing innovative web content, curating social media and building an engaged online community. The right candidate will have a vision for building an aggressive web presence from a community newsroom that has excelled in print for over 200 years.

Recently recognized as having the best community newspaper website in New Hampshire, they need someone who is excited about the journalistic possibilities at the intersection of new media and traditional shoe leather reporting. They are looking for someone who is smart, endlessly curious and passionately committed to journalism.

In addition to being the online vanguard, the position will include copyediting, page design (proficiency with InDesign is a plus) and content planning for print and web, as well as community building.
