Internship opening for the summer in Maine

THE ELLSWORTH AMERICAN’S 2012 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Ellsworth American, an award-winning 12,000-circulation weekly newspaper in Downeast
Maine, is looking for two paid full-time summer interns to write feature stories and take photos for its arts section and special sections, particularly a 50-page monthly entertainment guide and feature magazine called “Out & About.”
The internship runs from mid-May until Labor Day, with flexibility for individual schedules. This is a busy internship, requiring high energy, solid feature reporting and writing skills. Photography skills are a plus. The interns work 40 hours a week on a flexible schedule, meaning that they work the occasional Saturday or Sunday and take compensatory time later. An intern must have their own car and will be required to travel to assignments outside the office on a regular basis. Generating story ideas is encouraged, though not required. A sense of adventure and love of the outdoors are key to the job.
Ellsworth American interns have been new college graduates or undergraduates. The graduates
generally move directly into employment in the journalism field.
The newspaper’s offices and printing plant are in downtown Ellsworth, population 6,000, the county seat of Hancock County. Bar Harbor and Blue Hill are 20 minutes away, and Bangor is a half-hour away. Hancock County is an extremely popular tourist destination, and tourism accounts for most summer jobs. Year-round employment includes construction trades, fishing and farming. The county also has an unusually active arts community whose hectic summertime schedule includes gallery shows, concerts and theatrical performances.
The final deadline for application is Jan. 31. To apply, send resume and clips to Letitia Baldwin, The Ellsworth American,
30 Water St., Ellsworth, Maine 04605. Telephone: 207.667.2576, Ext: 301. Fax: 207.667.7656.
